Campus ChangeMakers

Many of you might be familiar with Young ChangeMakers (YCM) and might even have applied for it before.

Just for the uninitiated, YCM is a grant scheme that youth can apply for if they wish to initiate a project that can benefit the community and society at large.

The YCM grant has been in place since 2005. Following its success, the National Youth Council recently launched the Campus ChangeMakers (CCM) programme, a grant scheme modelled after the former to be set up in schools.

The grant assessments for CCM will be made by a youth panel comprising 20 to 30 students from the same school. The panel will access the project proposals by their peers and teachers will come into play by supervising the students throughout the process. The youth panel will also be given the option of undergoing skills training by alumni mentors.

Each school will receive $15,000 in total per year for project funding, with each project capped at $1,500 or 80 per cent of the project cost.

Currently, a total of five schools, namely Temasek Secondary School, North Vista Secondary School, West Spring Secondary School, Riverside Secondary School and Paya Lebar Methodist Girls' Secondary School are involved in the pilot phrase of the CCM programme. Projects that have been submitted range from raising awareness for environmental issues to improving student welfare.

I spoke to a teacher from Temasek Secondary School who told me that two announcements — one during assembly and one on the school’s e-learning system — were all it took to get good responses from the students to take up projects. He observed that students who participate in the CCM programme also acquire leadership qualities.
